Follower of Bartholomeus van der Helst
A double portrait of a gentleman and a lady

oil on canvas
unframed: 187.5 x 137 cm.; 73⅞ x 54 in.
framed: 205.5 x 154.5 cm.; 80⅞ x 60⅞ in.

Condition Report:
The canvas has been lined and is providing a flat and stable support to the paint surface. The surface is clean with some very fine and settled craquelure in some areas. A horizontal seam is visible across the central section of the canvas, minor discolouration to the retouching along this centre line, however only visible upon closer inspection. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an uneven layer of varnish, retouching to the aforementioned horizontal line and further scattered retouchings across the composition. Small areas of retouching to both sitters' faces with a larger section of retouching to the female sitter's lace shoulder covering, possibly a repaired tear. Repaired tear with associated retouching at the bottom of the female sitter's skirt, approximately 12cm in length. Further spots to her skirt. Overall the work is in fairly good condition.

Provenance:
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 31 October 2007, lot 19 (as circle of Bartholomeus van der Helst)
