The composition of the present work recalls the treatment of the subject of Judas returning the pieces of silver by Moeyaert in the collection of the British Museum [no.1994,0618.9], also executed in ink and wash. The scene treats the story of Matthew 27:3, with Judas portrayed as a wretched figure wracked with remorse for his betrayal of Jesus.
