Follower of Francesco Furini, Italian c.1600-1646- Portrait of a lady, bust-length, turned to the right; oil on canvas, 61 x 49 cm. Note: The present work is evocative of the classical Baroque imagery that dominated the artistic scene in Italy during the 17th Century. The sitter's costume and style of hair conform to the ideals of the classical female form that many artists strived to convey throughout the Renaissance. The artist's subtle use of sfumato is reminiscent of Furini's portraits, particularly his Self Portrait held in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
Unlined and on the original stretcher. The paint is stable on the support. Settled craquelure. Visible retouching evident to sitter's forehead, right cheek, beneath her left eye, chin, neck and chest, and areas in her dress. Dirty, discoloured and uneven varnish. Minor losses, scratches, marks and surface dirt. Inspection under UV lamp reveals historic retouching to the aforementioned areas in the sitter's face, neck, and chest, to her dress, and to sections in the background darks.
