Follower of Giovanni Antonio Canal, called Canaletto, 19th Century
Venice, the Piazzetta San Marco looking towards Santa Maria della Salute

oil on canvas
unframed: 59.9 x 49.5 cm.; 23⅝ x 19½ in.
framed: 82.5 x 73.3 cm.; 32½ x 28⅞ in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear. There are areas of well preserved impasto throughout, notable in the lower half of the composition, in the figures and architecture. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals and extensive campaign of retouching concentrated in the clouds and sky, the architecture and staffage appears to be free from intervention. The painting presents well and is in overall good condition.

Please note that Condition 12 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers (Online Only) is not applicable to this lot.

Catalogue Note:
This work is based on Canaletto's larger canvas of the same view formerly in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.1 A few compositional changes can be seen in this painting, notably in the staffage. This version is probably the one referenced in W.G. Constable's monograph (see Literature) as a school version of the Metropolitan Museum picture and recorded with Legatt Bros, London 1953.

1 W.G. Constable, Canaletto: Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697–1768, J.G. Links (ed.), Oxford 1976, vol. II, p. 257, no. 148; http://catalogo.fondazionezeri.unibo.it/entry/work/71344/Canal%20Giovanni%20Antonio%2C%20Veduta%20di%20Venezia%20con%20l%27ingresso%20al%20Canal%20Grande%20dalla%20Piazzetta
