The present composition is based on Baciccio's original portrait now in the Ricci collection, Milan. On the day of Cardinal Emilio Altieri's election in 1670 as Pope Clement X, since there were no more male descendants in the Altieri family, he adopted Paluzzo who changed his name to Paluzzo Paluzzi Altieri degli Albertoni in honour of his new adoptive uncle. In the same year he was appointed Bishop of Ravenna and papal legate in Avignon. Thereafter, Altieri was appointed, or appointed himself, to so many positions that he was accused by his contemporaries of megalomania.
