Follower of Giulio Pippi, called Giulio Romano,
Italian 1499-1546-
A nude classical figure with drapery, in profile, turned to the left;
pen and brown ink on laid paper, bears number '92' (upper right), and bears unidentified collector's mark with initials 'G. F. M.' in pen and brown ink (Lugt 3343) on the reverse, 10.6 x 7.8 cm.
Note: A similarly sized drawing by Romano entitled 'A priestess leading a sacrificial goat', which bears the same collector's mark 'G.F.M.' and is numbered '94' sold at Christie's, New York, 22 January 2003, lot 16 - see https://www.christies.com/lot/giulio-pippi-called-giulio-romano-rome-1499-1546-4049491/?intObjectID=4049491&lid=1.). According to Lugt, the handwritten initials have been reported on several important drawings, including those by Marco Marchetti, called Marco da Faenza; Nicolas Poussin; and Francesco de Herrera the Elder. While Jean-Luc Baroni suggested a 17th or 18th-century collector, Anthony Blunt has argued that the collection more likely dates to the early 19th century (see A. Blunt, 'Further Newly Identified Drawings by Poussin and His Followers', Master Drawings, XVII, summer 1979, Vol.2, p. 139).
