Follower of James Holland,
British 1799-1870-

Street scene with elegant figures hailing a carriage;

pencil, pen, brown ink and watercolour and bodycolour on paper, signed with initials and dated 'H.C. 1865' (lower left), 17.8 x 14.8 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The attention to architectural detail and confident use of sepia outlining combined with loose colour washes is strongly reminiscent of the work of watercolourist James Holland, who, even though he was best known for his Venetian scenes, produced many drawings in Britain too. Two notable examples include his renditions of a Welsh cottage and of Greenwich Hospital, both of which are in the collection of the Tate [T10250 and N03051 respectively].
