Follower of Luca Longhi, Italian 1507-1580- The Martyrdom of St Catherine; oil on canvas, 40.5 x 32.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Longhi was the leading artist in Ravenna in 16th-Century late Renaissance/Mannerist Italy, and he produced principally religious paintings and portraits. Despite his residency in Ravenna, he was an eclectic artist who derived inspiration from Venetian, Emilian and Central Italian masters. Giorgio Vasari visited Ravenna in 1548 and wrote about him in The Lives of the Artists: 'Luca de Longhi is a man of good nature, quiet and [a] scholar [who] has done in his homeland Ravenna, and outside, many beautiful oil pictures and portraits.' The subject of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, here, as often, represented with the wheel used for her martyrdom, is one he returned to on several occasions. See, for example, Bonhams, London, 7 July 2021, lot 21.
