Follower of Robert Dodd, British 1748-1815- The Quebec and the Surveillante in Action, 6 October 1779; enamel on steel panel, 51 x 74.5 cm. Provenance: John Denham Gallery, London, where purchased in 1997. Note: The present work is an adaptation of the painting of the same title by Robert Dodd, held at the National Maritime Museum Greenwich (no.BHC0426). HMS Quebec of the British Royal Navy is portrayed as the ship ablaze and dismasted on the right, with the frigate Surveillante of the French Navy on the left. Dodd was one of the principal recorders of the famous naval battles during the American Revolutionary Wars.
