(Italian, 1703?1772)The Thames from Somerset House Terrace Towards Westminster, after the composition by Canaletto (Italian, 1697?1768), unsigned, oil on canvas, 24-1/4 x 38 in.; Kent style painted and parcel gilt wood frame, 31-7/8 x 46 in.Note: The frame plate gives an attribution to Samuel Scott who adopted the style of the important Venetian painter, Canaletto. Canaletto established a studio in Britain to answer the demand for his paintings from wealthy art collectors. Beginning in 1746 he painted views of the Thames at London and Windsor. His success prompted Scott, William James and others to imitate his style and compositions.Mrs. Vanderbilt Webb's father was the director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.˜Provenance: Ex-Collection of Mrs. Vanderbilt Webb, New York, New York; Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Proceeds to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund
