Follower of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723)
Portrait of a lady, said to be Elizabeth, wife of Baptist Noel, 4th Earl of Gainsborough.
Inscribed "Elizabeth Countefs of Gainsborough as Bellona"
Oil on canvas, 110cm by 66cm

See illustration

.Relined. Retains good original surface. General infilling to the outer edges of the canvas. Some fine stable craquelure, however there are numerous areas of lifting paint; the background area beyond her outstretched right arm (approx. 20 cm at widest point), along left hand edge and tapering towards her elbow is significantly cracked, lifting and has consequent losses within this area. There is a further patch of precarious craquelure with small losses around the lower part of her spear, central part of the shield and within the fabric of her gown. Widely sized old craquelure has been in filled within the background behind the shield and is now visible with the eye. Minor retouches to the background to the left of the sitter and a small loss above her right shoulder. Other further small losses along right hand side edge and elsewhere. Some likely old strengthening within the drapery of her skirt, costume, definition of the shield and parts of the background above her left foot. Surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Reasonable overall condition but lifting paint in noted areas in an issue.
