This peaceful scene was sketched during the carriage trip from Bethlehem to Mauch Chunk. Departing on the 23 August 1832 they passed the Delaware Water Gap in the afternoon arriving at Dutotsburgh that evening. They surveyed the area the next day and left on the morning of the 25th, arriving at Sach's public house that evening. This scene was conceived of on the afternoon of the 27 August. Prince Maximilian noted in his journal that Bodmer waded backwards and forwards across the stream in search of perfect spot from which to sketch the bridge. The travelers continued their journey shortly thereafter, arriving at Mauch Chunk on the evening of 30 August.
