Foster (E.M.)

Holograph manuscript entitled 'The Treasures of Cambridge', being a description of a likely mid-1930's exhibition of Cambridge's cultural works of art of note. Forster writes "A Cambridge resident myself, I got on the London train as soon as the exhibition opened and perused the objects that had preceded me to the metropolis. Other Cambridge residents had had the same idea, so that when I entered Goldsmith's Mall I was welcomed by local sounds as well as by local sights"; he then lists the highlights of the exhibition, including a bust of Charles II, various paintings and sculptures and "more moving than all of them emotionally is the Essex Cup itself. This is the property of the Vice Chancellor and it was given to the University by its Chancellor, Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, three years before he was executed by Queen Elizabeth I"; five pages, rectos only but verso of page 5 with a crossed-out portion of a draft, also featuring revisions and amendments in another hand, light creasing to corners, 8vo, [Cambridge, c. 1930s]
