Four Murano Scavo Glass Amphora Vases, Cupronickel Handles

[ translate ]

Europe, Italy, Venice, Murano, ca. 1900–1999 CE. A set of four Murano scavo glass vases in the form of ancient amphorae, each with cupronickel mounts. Two have full, rounded bodies and two have tapering ovoid bodies. Each rises to a narrow neck and a wide, everted rim. Collars of coiled cupronickel wrap each neck and continue into a pair of looping handles whose ends curl against the shoulder. The glass comes in four colors: sunflower yellow, coral, a pale peach, and deep teal. The matte, slightly chalky scavo finish softens each color into an even glow, like glass that has spent centuries underground. The dull silvery metal adds to the archaeological look. Each vase has an indecipherable signature near the base. Size of yellow vase: 6.5" H x 4.75" W x 4" Diam (16.5 cm H x 12.1 cm W x 10.2 cm Diam); Size of teal vase: 6" H x 4.25" W x 3.5" Diam (15.2 cm H x 10.8 cm W x 8.9 cm Diam).

Scavo, Italian for "excavated," is a Murano technique that imitates the weathered, iridescence-free crust of ancient glass recovered from burial sites. While the gather is still hot, the glassblower rolls it in or dusts it with mineral powders and chemical agents. These fuse into the surface to leave a dry, granular, stone-like skin. The method is most closely associated with Venetian furnaces of the mid 20th century. The amphora shape used here deliberately echoes the Roman glass and ceramic vessels that the finish is meant to call to mind.

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection, from the estate of Eugene and Iris Rotberg
