Four: Rifleman F. Whitehead, 16th Battalion (Church Lads Brigade), King's Royal Rifle Corps, thrice wounded in the space of a week in February 1916, he was mortally wounded near Mametz Wood on 16 July 1916

Frank Whitehead was born at Rochdale, Lancashire in 1891, the son of William Whitehead. Married on 17 August 1914 to Annie Haywood at Wardleworth, Lancashire he enlisted on 21 September the same year. Posted to 16th Battalion (Church Lads Brigade), King's Royal Rifle Brigade on 3 October. Entering the war in France on 16 November 1915, Whithead is listed as suffering a gunshot wound to the head on 1 February 1916 and the next day another to the face. Returning to the Battalion on 6 February he suffered a gunshot wound to the back that same day. Whitehead was one of the men in action around Mametz Wood in July 1916, were he is noted as dying of wounds suffered in action. He is buried at Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz; sold together with an original newspaper cutting showing a picture of the recipient with details along with copied M.I.C., casualty information and Commonwealth War Graves details, along with handwritten and typed research.
