Four Staffordshire Pottery Toby Jugs

Four Staffordshire Pottery Toby Jugs, England, 19th century, each polychrome decorated in overglaze enamels, a Dr. Johnson, ht. 8; and three variations on a standard model, one with fanciful scrolled handle and wearing a blue coat, ht. 8 5/8; one with pale mauve coat and heavily blushed face, ht. 9 1/2; and one with pale raspberry coat and sponged base and handle, ht. 9 7/8 in.
Estimate $500-700

Blue coat: Firing flaw to glaze at back of hand; scattered chipping under footrim; flaking to one side of blue enamel on coat.
Mauve coat: Hat brim heavily restored; chips to bowl of pipe and footrim; restored handle and pipe stem.
Raspberry coat: Restoration to one side of hat brim; several patches of glaze loss retouched to back of hand, high socks and coat; small areas of glaze loss to backside and side of handle.
Dr. Johnson: Hand holding pitcher broken through and simply glued at wrist; patchy areas of black coat retouched; hat brom with repairs and edge chips.
