Fragment of an East Anatolian Pile Rug
18th century, 150 x 70 cm, East Anatolia
This large fragment is the upper right-hand corner of a historic rug from East Anatolia. The black-brown field comprises palmettes and wide serrated leaves interspersed with small rosettes and diamonds. Remains of palmettes that survive on the left-hand side show that these motifs formed a design of horizontal rows. The way the leaves fitted into the composition is a question yet to be resolved.
Condition
Low pile. Obvious signs of age and wear. Missing sections and holes. backed with fabric and mounted onto a wooden frame.
