Framed Chancay Polychrome Textile Panel w/ Zoomorphs

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, central coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fascinating textile displaying a pair of abstract avian figures flanked above and below by a border of horizontal bands, all adorned in hues of maroon, marigold, olive, pink, caramel, beige, black, and white. Each of the eccentric zoomorphs displays a circular body with a curved, open beak and an almond-shaped eye, all flanked by a pair of extended, zigzag wings that flare at the ends. A series of curling wave-like decorations line both sides of the wings, perhaps representing feathers, as a pair of legs with large feet and sharp talons are shown below the lower wing of each ancient animal. Size (of textile): 9" L x 5.25" W (22.9 cm x 13.3 cm); Size (with frame): 17.25" W x 14.375" H (43.8 cm x 36.5 cm)
