Framed Chancay Textile Fragments w/ Birds

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A beautiful textile panel made from several fragments of the same item, and each fragment is composed of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of coffee and cream. The textile displays several identical registers of stylized avian figures among a field of abstract stepped, linear, and triangular forms. Birds were incredibly symbolic in many ancient Peruvian cultures and were used to adorn many different types of clothing and woven items. Custom fabric-lined frame included. Size (textile): 17.25" W x 10.5" H (43.8 cm x 26.7 cm); size (frame): 23.75" W x 17.75" H (60.3 cm x 45.1 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
