[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $1500**

Eason Eige (American, active since 2004), oil on canvas, "Still Life with Japanese Painting, Dan Ancestral Mask, Igbo Sculpture, and Navajo Painting" - subject and dated July 17, 2015 on verso. Eason Eige is an artist, a collector, as well as a writer who has a passion for Native American art, African art, Asian art, as well as the entire span of art history. This very large composition presents a magical meeting of visual culture from Africa, Japan, and the American Southwest - delineated in a fresh, expressive style and a vibrant color palette. From left to right Eige includes a Japanese painting, an Igbo sculpture, a Navajo painting, and a Dan ancestral mask. One of Eige's greatest influences is Cezanne, and one can see how Cezanne's innovative Post-Impressionist technique impacted Eige's style in this composition - how he plays with the picture planes and paints pictorially without being photographic in his intent. The massive canvas is mounted in an intricately carved frame. Size: 48" L x 24" W (121.9 cm x 61 cm); 55" L x 30.875" W (139.7 cm x 78.4 cm)

When asked about his process, Eige replied, "Whether I am painting a still life or a portrait, I will begin by painting while looking at my subject and at some point separate myself from the subject and concentrate on the painting itself - and that's when the painting is the reality. For me the painting is the reality."

Born and raised in Iowa, Eason Eige studied painting, drawing, printmaking, and art history at the Kansas City Art Institute, Parsons, and Winterthur. In addition, Eige was chief curator of the Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia for 21 years. Following this chapter of his career, he began painting once again in 2004. Eige's work has recently been exhibited at Freestyle Gallery in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
