Sam Hyde Harris (British-born American, 1889-1977). "Neglected" Oil on wood panel, ca. 1950. A poetic landscape painting by celebrated California artist Sam Hyde Harris. Aptly titled "Neglected", the composition features a barren tree in a surrounding landscape of grasses and shrubs presenting warm reds and greens as autumn is turning to winter. Set in a beautiful frame, this is a mesmerizing work by Harris. Size: 15.5" W x 11.5" H (39.4 cm x 29.2 cm); 21" W x 17.5" H (53.3 cm x 44.4 cm) including frame

Sam Hyde Harris came to America from Middlesex, England at age 15, and settled with his family in Los Angeles, California. He studied with Stanton McDonald-Wright, Frank Tolles Chamberlain, Laurance Murphy, Will Foster, and Hanson Puthuff. Early in his career, Harris created art for posters for the Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, and Sante Fe railroads - all of which are collector's items today. During the Great Depression, Hyde taught art at venues such as the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. At age 55, he purchased Jack Wilkinson Smith's old studio on Champion Place in Alhambra. Surrounded by eucalyptus and pine trees, the property had an amazing view of the San Gabriel Mountains earning it the nickname Artists' Alley and later on the titles of "Little Bohemia" as well as the "Greenwich Village" and the "Montmartre" of the Southwest. The alley attracted notable artists, including Norman Rockwell. In time, the famous desert artist James Swinnerton also introduced Harris to desert landscapes. Harris would go on to receive critical praise, winning many awards.
