Framed Spanish Colonial Painting - La Anima Sola

[ translate ]

Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fine oil on canvas painting depicting "La Anima Sola" (Lone Soul or Lonely Spirit) looking up toward a Cristo that radiates holy light, a dramatic depiction that represents a soul in purgatory in a style influenced by the great Baroque tradition of tenebroso (tenebrism) - employing pronounced chiaroscuro with extreme contrasts of lights and darks to imbue the composition with strong emotional content rivaling that of live theater. Christ's anatomy is skillfully delineated with a severely emaciated torso and limbs as well as blood streaming from stigmata (the marks indicative of Christ's Crucifixion wounds). His downturned eyes and Crown of Thorns heighten the emotional impact of the piece. In contrast, the Anima Sola presents wide open eyes gazing upward at the Cristo and a soft fleshy body licked by the red flames of purgatory. Overall, an impressive and sizeable painting set in an attractive custom wood frame that captures the drama of this meaningful religious iconography. Size: 22.625" L x 16.5" W (57.5 cm x 41.9 cm)

The Anima Sola, for those unfamiliar, represents a departed ancestral soul awaiting judgement in the flames of purgatory. The Anima Sola (Lonely Soul) may be invoked when a family member or loved one dies in sin or conversely, to send an enemy to a state of temporary suffering or misery in purgatory.

Provenance: ex-private San Diego, California, USA collection

#144698
Condition Report: Some repairs to upper left, center, right, and bottom of composition. Impressions from stretcher bars around periphery. Creases to canvas here and there. Normal age wear with some scuffs and darkening. Still the imagery is strong. Frame dates later, but its style works very well with the painting and it is in excellent condition.
