Framed & Signed British Painting of Horse Race (1924)

[ translate ]

Europe, England, 1924. Signed and dated on the lower right. "And they're off!" An exciting oil on canvas by an early 20th century British sporting artist who clearly admired Henry Alken (British, 1810-1894) with a composition that features two jockeys who appear to be hard at work from the start (note the race start bell visible in the middle ground) to be. The race is on, and they are speedily heading toward the finish line. For the moment, the jockey in green riding the white horse seems to be edging out the jockey in yellow and green riding the brown horse, but this is only the beginning of the race. A dignified crowd dressed in coats and hats cheers in the background. Which horse are you betting on winning this race of unbridled excitement? Size: 25" W x 17.75" H (63.5 cm x 45.1 cm); 32.375" W x 25.125" H (82.2 cm x 63.8 cm) framed.

Horses racing at impressive speeds have inspired artists for centuries. This subject particularly captivated French and British artists of the 18th and 19th centuries - reflecting the rich history of equine culture in France and England. Equine sports were first established by the Tudors and artists were invited to the horse races. Artists in turn created wonderful renderings of the horses' mesmerizing gallop, lightning fast stride, and muscular form - and their compositions continue to take our breath away!
