France Map from Ruscelli's 'Geografia'
Dated 1599 AD. A two-page spread entitled 'Tabvla Evropae III' from Girolamo Ruscelli La Geografia di Claudio Tolomeo Alessandrino second volume, Della Gegrafia di Tolomeo pp.24-7; hand-coloured map of the France and western Germany with galley and fish in the Bay of Biscay, principal towns and geographical features; translated from Greek into 16th century Italian, printed text. 6.6 grams, 33cm (13"). Ex Swiss collection; acquired 1980s. Claudius Ptolemaios (here Claudio Tolemeo) was born in Alexandria, Egypt, circa 100 AD and became famed as a profound scholar of mathematics, astronomy, geography and poetry in the Roman provinces of his time. He wrote profusely in Koiné Greek and held Roman citizenship. The map was included in his book of maps which discussed the geography of the known world based on the scientific knowledge available to Roman scholarship in the 2nd century AD. He died in Alexandria, circa 168 AD.
