Philippe VI (1328-1350) Écu d'or à la chaise ND (from 1337) AU Details (Edge Filing, Bent) NGC, Paris mint, Fr-270, Dup-249 var. 4.49gm. 1st Emission (from 1 January 1337) +PhILIPPVS: DЄI x | x GRΛ x | FRΛnCORVM: RЄX (saltire and double saltire stops), Philippe seated facing on Gothic throne, a sword in his right hand and his left supporting a shield, all within tressure / + XPC: VInCIT: XPC: RЄGИΛT: XPC: INPЄRAT (double annulet stops), cross fleurée with quatrefoil at center and at the ends of the limbs, leaves in angles; all within a quadrilobe with trefoils in spandrels. Despite the bend and some waves in the flan, the intended imagery is mostly recognizable, a trait important for appreciating these centuries old gold issues that were not made with the modern precision we have come to understand.
