Light cavalry officer’s sabre, 1800 type, 1st Empire: Total length with sheath: 97 cm, sabre length: 94 cm Sabre: blade: 83 cm, arrow: 6 cm, width at the heel: 3 cm Consulate/First Empire Period Gridded ebony grip. Blade engraved, blued and gilded along a third of its length, curved, with one sharpened side, opposite side ending in a pointed tip. Trophy of weapons, signed ‘SHF’. The two letters ‘S H’ stand for ‘Samuel Hoppe’ or ‘Simon Helvig’ (who are actually one and the same individual, an arms-maker in Solingen) . The ‘F’ is for son (fils) or brother (frère) ; the company was in operation from 1827 to 1861. Brass sheath with two suspension rings. Dents to the sheath and gaps in the bluing.
