Francesco Lavagna A pair of floral still lifes in gilt...

[ translate ]

Property of the Marquess of Downshire

Francesco Lavagna
active second half of the 18th century
A pair of floral still lifes in gilt vases: one of summer flowers, including pink roses; the other of narcissi and a lily

a pair, both oil on canvas
each unframed: 28.6 x 21.1 cm.; 11¼ x 8¼ in.
each framed: 48.3 x 41.4 cm.; 19 x 16¼ in.
(2)

Condition Report:
Both canvases are lined, and both paint surfaces are very dirty with discoloured varnishes. Both paint surfaces show evidence of slight wear. There are some minor scuff marks visible in both and both also have some visible discoloured retouchings in the background. Inspection under ultraviolet is impeded by the thick, fluorescing varnish. Only a handful of small retouchings are revealed in both. It is easier to perceive intervention with the naked eye. Both paintings would benefit from restoration.

Catalogue Note:
We are grateful to Dott. Alberto Crispo for proposing the attribution to Francesco Lavagna upon inspection of digital images.

Provenance:
In the family collection of the Marquess of Downshire for three generations.
