We often dwell on the fragility of plants, but their shapes testify to an extraordinary resilience. Some plants adopt strategies to cope with the threat of predators or the harshness of the environment, structuring themselves in complex ways or assuming compact and threatening shapes. These archetypal forms communicate a defensive posture; sometimes they are caskets and sometimes protective armor of a precious and vulnerable part. In this image, the horse chestnut's pointed shell becomes a monstrous little mask ready to face a challenge. " n.
