The composition depicts Christ’s Agony in the Garden, with Christ and the angel at the centre, the sleeping apostles at one side, and the Roman soldiers arriving with torches at the other. Trevisani developed the composition in several versions, both autograph and with the assistance of his workshop, in different formats and on different supports. The present copper dates to the artist’s mature period and is distinguished by its refined handling of light, smooth brushwork, and precise draughtsmanship.
