\Artist: Francesco Zuccarelli (1702-1788) , cerchia di
Technique: olio su tela applicata su tavoletta cm. 29 x 22,5\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 60_11_53_cm
FRANCESCO ZUCCARELLI (Pitigliano, 1702 - Florence, 1788) [Circle of] Small landscape with shepherd and wayfarers Oil on canvas applied on tablet, cm. 29 x 22. 5 Frame size, cm. 50 x 43 x 5 c. a. NOTES: Unsigned work. Certificate of Lawful Origin. Work with gilded frame (defects) : ". . . Splendid ancient painting, oil on canvas, from the 18th century, depicting a small landscape with shepherd and wayfarers. The painting bears a collection attribution to Francesco Zuccarelli (Pitigliano, 1702 - Florence, 1788) , here taken with caution due to the lack of information on the work, it being understood that the general characteristics of the image, the colors and the type of the face would seem pertinent to the artist's manner, who places its execution in his youthful activity, when the artist dialogues with the examples of Marco Ricci, the chromatically contrasted landscape legacies of Alessandro Magnasco and the works of Pieter Mulier known as il Tempesta. In our case, and peculiar to the artist's temperament, the composition expresses a less concrete naturalistic feeling than the ricceschi modes, presenting a scenario softened by that Arcadian and picturesque feeling that distinguishes his canvases. Added to this is the unscrupulous pictorial frankness, which combines tradition and renewal, achieving results that are not only of the highest quality but also of pre-romantic taste. Francesco Zuccarelli (Pitigliano, August 15, 1702 - Florence, December 30, 1788) was an Italian painter of the Rococo period. Francesco Zuccarelli was born in Pitigliano, in the province of Grosseto, in 1702. He studied in Florence in the workshop of Paolo Anesi and later moved to Rome with the painters Giovanni Maria Morandi and Pietro Nelli. He was initially a painter of historical subjects inspired by the knowledge of painting by Claude Lorrain, a seventeenth-century French painter who lived in Rome who was a master of this genre together with his compatriot, but more scenographic, Nicolas Poussin. Moving to Venice, Zuccarelli turned to Arcadian painting, which he cultivated in competition with Giuseppe Zais from Belluno. As happened to other Venetian painters of his contemporaries, such as Canaletto and Bernardo Bellotto, his painting was highly appreciated abroad where he was called to paint for wealthy patrons such as the famous Consul Joseph Smith. Zuccarelli worked a lot in England where he influenced important local painters in a particular way his style was taken up by the great Joshua Reynolds. After five years in London, Zuccarelli returned to Venice. Back in London in 1765, he was one of the founders of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768. He returned to Italy in 1773 rich and admired by the British public. He worked and had other large commissions until over 75 years in particular for villas and palaces of the Venetian and Lombard aristocracy but most of his paintings are still in England today. Back in Tuscany, Zuccarelli died in Florence on 30 December 1788. We can conclude by stating that in the painting proposed here we can recognize the ways of Zuccarelli, in particular those of the Venetian period, when he turned to Arcadian painting, which he cultivated in competition with Giuseppe Zais from Belluno. Some details including the dry tree in the foreground and the landscape construction make the attribution to Zuccarelli highly probable (which would be confirmed by the plate in the frame) , without however making it certain. In the frame, small drops of color. Regarding its state of conservation, the painting is in fairly good general condition considering the age of the painting, the pictorial surface is in patina. We can see - in Wood's light - some scattered restorations and some slight unveiling and oxidation of the pictorial surface, however nothing really relevant. There are no conservation problems and the original canvas was applied on a wooden board, which does not seem to need any interventions. The measurements of the work are cm. 29 x 22. 5. The painting is sold with a beautiful gold frame, probably from ancient times (?) . ORIGIN: Coll. private PUBLICATION: Unpublished; MYTHS AND THE TERRITORY in Sicily with a thousand cultures. UNPUBLISHED QUADRERIA general catalog of paintings from the collection of the “Myths and the territory” cycle, Publisher Lab_04, Marsala, (in print 2021) . We also guarantee accurate packaging with external wooden crate and bubble wrap / cardboard / internal polystyrene (packaging cost approximately € 50/100) and tracked shipping (€ 50/100 Italy) .
