Francis Clark Brown Indiana, Iowa, Connecticut (1908-1992) Brown County Bridge Landscape oil on masonite signed lower left. From the Archives of Askart: The following, submitted July 2003, is from Douglas Runyan, New Haven, Indiana: Francis Clark Brown was born August 7, 1908, in New Sharon, Iowa. He won a scholarship to the John Herron Institute in Indianapolis. He was a student of Clifton Wheeler, William Forsyth and Oakley Richey. He died October 12, 1992, at Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana. He was a member of the Indiana Artists Club, the Kokomo Art Association and the Brown County Art Guild from 1971 until his death. According to a newspaper article appearing in the Marion, Indiana Chronicle-Tribune on March 30, 1986, Brown was a retired Quaker minister and had painted 2,689 paintings in his 62 years of painting. Brown was quoted as stating that he had sold more than 2,000 paintings for amounts as high as $1,600 and had about 300 paintings in his Nashville gallery in 1986 with price tags ranging from $50 to $2,000. According to Peter Falk in Who Was Who in American Art, Francis Brown was a WPA (Works Progress Administration) artist and exhibited with Indiana artist associations including the Hoosier Salon and the Indiana Art Club. 23 1/4"H x 28 1/2"W (image), 27 1/4"H x 32 1/2"W (frame)
