Francis Cotes, "Mrs. Johnson", c. 1765-8, O/C
Francis Cotes
English, 1726-1770
"Portrait of Mrs. Johnson" - circa 1765-1768
Oil on canvas
Apparently unsigned, label with title, artist, and date, with note "authenticated by Wm. Roberts", faint black stamp for "Christies / P", and inscribed in permanent marker "NYF 829" to stretcher. Framed. Note: The label possibly refers to William Roberts (1862-1940), an art critic and sales correspondent of the Times whose expertise lay in British art. He would often provide authentication services for 18th century British paintings. His archives are housed in the Paul Mellon Centre in London, a part of Yale University.
