Francis Dahl (American, 1907-1973) Runs on the Treasury and Just the Ticket!, Boston Herald newspaper cartoons (two works), 1940 India ink, pencil, and gouache on heavyweight paper 10-1x2 x 15-3x4 inches (26.7 x 40.0 cm) (each, image) Each signed lower right: Dahl Francis Dahl was a self-taught, highly popular Boston cartoonist, and his daily cartoons appeared from the 1930s to the 1970s in the Boston Herald (later Herald-Traveler) and Boston Globe newspapers. His sequential panel format often blended humorous and pointed depictions of daily life with national issues. Runs on the Treasury picks up on the "flimsiness of women's stockings" and, in the final panel, embeds it in national budget being studied by President Roosevelt in the oval office. It was published in the Herald on April 15, 1940; the artist dated his work at lower left and the paper's dated publication stamp is on the back. Just the Ticket! focuses on potential Republican candidates for president in 1940, including Thomas Dewey, and the seemingly low amount paid to the nation's president and vice-president. In the final panel FDR, a fabulously wealthy man in his own right, smiles knowingly in his office. It was published in the Herald on May 29, 1940; the artist dated his work at lower left and the paper's dated publication stamp is on the back.
