Francisco Goya (1746 1828)
Goya - Le Descañona - First edition / Description: First edition - 1799. From the rare first edition (of twelve) of Los Caprichos, plate 35. The series called Los Caprichos, consists of eighty etchings. This first edition of 1799, the only one not to be published posthumously, is imprinted on soft laid paper of great quality and is printed using a delicate sepia ink. Cured in phase edition by the same artist, the series was marketed and before long withdrawn from the market. In fact, because of the many subjects that mocked the Spanish society of the century, Goya suffered censorship. For this it is estimated only about 300 copies. The interpretation of the subjects represented on these plates, always enigmatic, is often controversial. ------ Los Capricos - Le descañona (She fleeces him). young man being shaved by young woman, looking lovingly at her; Lettered on plate with number '35' and title 'Le descañona.'------In all details similar to the one in the Met in NY. Included the little scratches in the bottom left corner below the etching and blur of ink in the plate border left one cm from the bottom. The edition is also detirmenable by the paper size (320 x 220 mm) and the type of paper (soft but strong laid). The sheet is here trimmed a few milimeter at left to hide the binding holes.

/ Dimensions: 0 / Condition: A very fine impression, showing a good contrast, on contemporary paper, with wide margins, moderate thumbing and mild spotting mainly in the wide margins, otherwise in perfect condition. / Literature: Blas, Matilla & Medrano 1999, no. 35; Harris 70.III.1 (= the first edition, published 1799) , State I are working proofs, state II are trail proofs, both are not on the market. / Medium: Etching and burnished aquatint
