Francisco Zuniga Charcoal & Pencil Drawing 1964

Jose Jesus Francisco Zuniga Chavarria (Costa Rican/Mexican, 1912-1998). Figural charcoal and pencil graphite drawing depicting a crouching woman, 1964. Signed and dated along the lower left.

Provenance: Shapiro Auctions, Winter 2021, Lot 694; Private Collection, Minnesota.

Influenced by pre-Hispanic art, he often spent time sketching images of women in traditional markets, feeling that they represented maternity and familial responsibility. He was influenced by German Expressionism as well as French sculptors Aristide Maillol and Auguste Rodin. His works received much praise and he was hailed as "perhaps the best sculptor" of the Mexican political modern style by journalist Fernando Gonzalez Gortazar.
Sight; 24 1/2 in x width: 19 1/2 in. Framed; height: 34 1/2 in x width: 29 1/2 in.
Condition: The drawing is in good condition with no visible tears, creases, or major creases. There are handling marks throughout the recto. There is an impression to the head. There is a blue paint accretion in between the feet. There is another unidentified mark to the left of the figure. Framed under the glass. Not inspected out of frame. Wear to the frame.
