Franciszka Themerson, British/Polish 1907-1988 - Untitled, 1964; ink on paper, signed and dated lower left 'Themerson 64', 64.5 x 52.7 cm: together with a first edition copy of 'Professor MMAA's Lecture' and a paperback edition of 'Cardinal Polatuo' both printed by Gaberbocchus Press and written by Stefan Themerson, the artist's husband (3) (ARR) Provenance: gifted to the owner directly by the artist Note: there is copy of a letter from the artist to the original owner of the work, dated the 10th October 1966. This is a brilliant example of Themerson’s work, demonstrating her precise, confident use of line and endless playfulness. Treading a unique line between figuration and abstraction, Themerson was a central figure in Post-War European art, alongside her contemporaries Jean Dubuffet, Joan Miro and Magda Cordell. Themerson worked across media, creating paintings, illustrations and experimental films alongside her husband, the writer Stefan Themerson. During her lifetime she had major solo exhibitions at Gallery One in 1957, Marjorie Parr Gallery in 1965 and a major retrospective at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1975, and her work is in major collections including the Tate and the Arts Council.
