Antique Victorian Photogravure 1881

"Poor Love", after the painting by Francois-Claudius Compte-Calix (1813-1880), engraved by Goupil, 1881; printed on heavy stock paper; signed in plate "F.C. Compte-Calix, Pinx." and "Gravure Goupil et Cie.". "The Masterpieces of French Art". The description page for this print is included.

"A mighty pain to love it is." --Deep sadness shadows the handsome features of this young man, yet we have lively hopes in his favor. His lovely companion--innocent cause of his distress-- is very sympathetic. She appreciates his trouble, and would fain minister consolation. As they pass Cupid's image, she presses her lover's arm and , with a gentle gesture, ejaculates, "Poor Love!"...The painter has treated the subject with refined and poetic taste. How beautiful the shaded walk, and what a charming play of light there is among the trees!" [The Masterpieces of French Art]. This painting was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1870.

Francois-Claudius Comte-Calix (1813, Lyons - 1880, Chazay d. Azergues), a French painter of genre subjects and portraits. He studied at the school of fine art in Lyons and in the studio of J.C. Bonnefond. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1840 and his 'Vieil Ami,' painted in 1863, at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1867. He was honored with Salon medals in 1844, 1857, and 1863.[Bryan's Dictionary of Painters and Engravers, by Michael Bryan, edited by Robert Edmund Graves and Sir Walter Armstrong, 1886-1889].

In 1870s - 90s, Goupil & Cie were the leading art dealers in 19th century France, with headquarters in Paris and a network of branches in London, Brussels, The Hague, Berlin and Vienna, as well as in New York and Australia. Instrumental for this expansion was the "Ateliers Photographiques", a plant north of Paris, in Asnieres, which took up its work in 1869. The photogravures created in this plant dominated the world art market of 1880s-1890s.

The creation of the photogravure plate was a complicated process requiring a work by a photographer and experienced master-engraver. First, a copper plate was coated with a light-sensitive gelatin tissue which had been exposed to a film positive, and then etched, resulting in a high quality intaglio print that can reproduce the detail and continuous tones of a photograph. It is a manual process. Therefore, the quality of the photogravure depends on the masterly execution by the engraver.

In contrary to steel engravings, photogravures leave a plate impression in the paper. Due to relative softness of copper, the editions of photogravures were limited to a few thousand copies similarly to copper engravings and etchings.

Artwork will be mailed unframed.
