Fiedler, born Ferenc Fiedler, demonstrated artistic talent early on, copying works by Old Masters as a child. After completing a classical education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest in 1946, he settled in Paris following World War II. There, he increasingly abandoned figurative painting in favor of abstraction. Fiedler quickly integrated into the postwar Parisian art scene. Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, and Alexander Calder recognized and championed his talent; Miró facilitated an introduction to Aimé Maeght. Consequently, Fiedler was represented by the Galerie Maeght and exhibited at venues such as the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles and the Salon de Mai. From the 1950s onwards, Fiedler created large-scale, gestural compositions. Characteristic features include flowing trails of paint, layering, areas of high density, and relief-like surfaces that merge the contrasts of fluidity and materiality, darkness and light. While his work is closely aligned with European Art Informel and Tachisme, its picture-filling, "all-over" composition also reveals an affinity with the Abstract Expressionism of the New York School. In addition to painting, Fiedler devoted himself extensively to printmaking, particularly etching and monotype techniques. In his works on paper, he sought to achieve a density, materiality, and dramatic impact comparable to that of his paintings. François Fiedler left behind an internationally oriented body of work that fuses French postwar abstraction with influences from Hungarian Modernism and American abstract painting.

PLEASE NOTE:
The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
