This photograph was taken in the context of a comprehensive survey of the working world in France, which was commissioned by the publishing house 'Horizons de France' and published in several volumes under the title 'La France travaille' between 1931 and 1934.
As an immigrant from modest circumstances, Kollar managed to persuade miners, vintners, boatmen, and railroad workers to allow him to photograph them at their daily work with his large-format camera.
