François-Xavier Lalanne Petit Ours

[ translate ]

François-Xavier Lalanne
1927 - 2008

Petit Ours

Designed circa 1984-1986
Patinated bronze
Monogrammed FxL, numbered 4/8 and with the foundry's mark BOCQUEL FONDEUR on the terrace
50 x 25 x 25 cm ; 19 ¾ x 9 ⅞ x 9 ⅞ in.

Condition Report:
This Petit Ours is in overall good condition and presents with subtle variations of patina.
The patinated bronze surface presents with light oxidation mainly noticeable on the head, a few light scattered scuffs and a few light scratches along with tiny losses of patina mainly noticeable on the proper left arm, the back and near the proper right eye, all not affecting the overall aspect of the piece.
We observe a small area of wear to the patina on one ear, revealing the original colour of the bronze, but not visually distracting.
The base presents with some liquid stains, a few abrasions and tiny oxidation stains, consistent with normal aging of the material.

Catalogue Note:
The bear is one of the oldest animal figures represented in the history of art. As early as Prehistory, most notably in the Chauvet Cave, it appears as a fascinating creature, embodying strength, protection, and wisdom, transcending centuries and civilizations. In the fables of Jean de La Fontaine, the bear represents generous strength, albeit sometimes lacking discernment. A great lover of literature, François-Xavier Lalanne often drew inspiration from this rich narrative tradition, where animals become fully fledged characters imbued with distinct personalities and symbolic meaning. Petit Ours thus belongs to this enduring cultural lineage, reinterpreted by the artist with poetry, wit, and humanity, transforming this iconic animal into a presence that is at once monumental and deeply sensitive.

Provenance:
Acquired directly from the artist in 1989
