Franconia late 15th century

A carved wood figure of the Virgin and Child, Franconia, late 15th century

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. Remnants of earlier polychromy. Depiction of the crowned Virgin standing in a gently swaying pose on a crescent moon, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint, holding the nude Christ child with Her right hand, the sceptre originally held in Her extended left hand no longer extant. The Virgin's facial features and the play of folds in the voluminous mantle that encompasses Her slightly elongated form both point to the influence of the Franconian sculptor Veit Stoß.
Losses to the crown and top of the Virgin's head, as well as the Child's fingers. The Virgin's left hand presumably replaced. Minor wear throughout. Height 101 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Hesse.
