Frank Lloyd Wright (American, 1867-1959) Textile Block from the Ennis House, circa 1924 Concrete 17 x 16 x 7 inches (43.2 x 40.6 x 17.8 cm) PROVENANCE: Frank Lloyd Wright, Ennis House, Los Angeles, until 2006; Private Collection, Los Angeles. Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis house in Los Angeles (1923-24), is one of Wright's most significant west coast achievements and the largest example of his textile block buildings. Located in the hills at the edge of Griffith Park, it is composed of several layers as it is placed, as was Wright's practice, on the brow of the hill which slopes downward into the city. Each layer is wrapped in 16" square, sculpted blocks, from the retaining walls to the house itself. This technique allowed Wright to make the structure and skin together, while also exploring stylistic elements clearly influenced by Mayan temples. The Ennis house is also an example of the efforts needed to preserve architecture. It underwent a major restoration in 2007 after sustaining major damage during the Northridge earthquake and years of heavy rains. This textile block was salvaged by a neighbor of the house when many of the original blocks were being disposed during restoration. It has sat across the canyon on their balcony, in dramatic view of the Ennis house itself. Photograph by the consignor.
