(1936-2007)
"Pagosa Springs," from the "Copper Series," 1970
Lithograph and screenprint in color on paper
Edition: 63/75
Signed, dated, and numbered in pencil in the lower right margin corner: F. Stella; Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles, CA, pub., with the blindstamp
Sheet: 16" H x 22" W
Provenance: The Estate of Oscar and Barbara Leidenfrost

Created in 1970, "Pagosa Springs" is one from a series of seven lithographs relating to the artist's "Copper Series" of paintings created between 1960 and 1961.

Printed and published by Gemini G.E.L., each of these lithographs both revisit and reinterpret these iconic paintings from an early period of Stella's career. Titled after mining towns found in the mountainous regions of Colorado, these prints are an homage to the region of the United States that was the nation's primary source of copper and silver at the turn of the twentieth century.

From a technical perspective, each print from this series is relatively complex: these lithographs were created using several screens through which metallic paints and tinted varnishes were applied in order to create the final image. As such, each print from the "Copper Series" is much more than simply a reproduction of Stella's iconic paintings. A full page in the Frank Stella catalogue raisonne of prints is dedicated to this particular print from the series, "Pagosa Springs."

Other impressions of this print are held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Buffalo AKG Art Gallery, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

Hinged to the back mat with archival tape in two places from the verso of the upper edge.Framed under lucite: 18.25" H x 24.25" W x 1.5" D Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
