Frank Weston Benson Signed Sailboat Pencil Sketch
Signed Sketch

An untitled pencil sketch by American Impressionist painter Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951), depicting a sailboat with birds flying overhead. Measuring 4.25" x 6.5", no place, undated. Signed at bottom right by the artist as "F. W. Benson". The sketch, reminiscent of his other nautical drawings Off Pea Island (1921) and Bound Home (1918), is mounted to a decorative mat featuring rose gold foil. Accompanied by a series of photocopies offering context to the unnamed sketch. Exhibits light edge toning and flattened crease near bottom right corner, else near fine. Not examined outside of display. Attractively frame to the overall size of 13.5" x 16".

Frank Weston Benson was an American artist from Salem, Massachusetts known for his Realistic portraits, American Impressionist paintings, watercolors and etchings. He would begin his career by painting portraits of distinguished families as well as murals for the Library of Congress, but many of his later well known paintings would come to depict his daughters at the family's summer home in Maine. Impressionism, particularly the work of Claude Monet, played a role in the development of Benson's own American Impressionistic style, capitalizing on a similar color palette and brush strokes while still maintaining some detail in the composition

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
