Franklin D. Roosevelt TLS

[ translate ]

Franklin D. Roosevelt signed letter regarding torpedo defense systems just months after entering World War II. Roosevelt responds on June 6, 1942 to a proposed torpedo net designed by Robert Graham. FDR passed along the proposal to the Navy for review and reports back that the Navy has looked at similar proposals and explains why Graham s design is impractical. His conclusion reveals the urgency FDR and the Navy placed on the problem. The whole subject of protection against torpedoes, including net protection for vessels, is now under the most active consideration .and it is hoped that before long current experimentation will be productive of profitable results. Graham developed a friendship with FDR as the architect of two schools in Hyde Park, one of which was named in FDR s honor. The single, full page letter is on White House stationery and the envelope is included. The letter is in mint condition and only recently obtained by the family, thus appears on the market for the first time. FDR letters discussing the war or military matters are difficult to find. For all of his correspondence he seldom wrote about military matters except to other government officials. This is a very nice example discussing a major threat to shipping and the navy.
