Frans Francken painted this motif several times in various formats. It was highly popular in the early 17th century as a symbol for compassion and charity towards the poor. Francken painted two variations in portrait format and two in landscape. The present work is almost identical to a painting from 1605 housed in the Brotmuseum in Ulm (U. Haerting: Frans Francken II, 1989, cat. no. 164-167).
