Frans de Momper was the nephew of the landscape painter Joos de Momper. He became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St Luke in 1629. He created landscapes in the manner of his uncle. His palette was later influenced by the tonal colours of Jan van Goyen. The present colourful landscape was probably created before Momper's move to the northern Netherlands in 1646. A similar composition with a village fair was offered on the French art market in 1978 (see RKD picture archive, no. 547204).
