Condition Report:
The cotton fabric on the blue covers and the orange elements presents some creases, which are inherent to the artist’s choice of media. The fabric is dusty in places. This work is in overall very good condition.

Franz Erhard Walther is a German artist whose work is crossed by a problematic of space and experience. He seeks to integrate the viewer into an environment created from scratch using textile elements referred to as "activation objects". Executed in 1991, Chant de Paris is a modular work composed of a reversible cotton surface. Rather than complying with traditional views of art, the artist considers material processes, the visitor’s wanderings, as well as exhibition modalities as integral to his work. In order to forge a conscious and personal experience of aesthetic phenomena, the artist creates a work that calls for physical interaction. Thus, Chant de Paris attests to an innovative approach that includes the viewer in the making of the work.

Franz Erhard Walther est un artiste allemand dont l’œuvre est traversée par une problématique de l’espace et de l’expérience. Ce dernier cherche à intégrer le spectateur dans un environnement crée de toute pièce à partir d’éléments textiles qu’il surnomme « activation objects ». Exécutée en 1991, Chant de Paris est une œuvre modulable dont la surface en coton demeure réversible. Plutôt que de se plier aux paramètres traditionnels de l’art, ce dernier envisage les procédés matériels, les déambulations du spectateur ainsi que les modalités d’exposition comme faisant partie intégrante de son travail. En vue de forger une expérience consciente et personnelle des phénomènes esthétiques, l’artiste crée une œuvre qui appelle à l’interaction physique. C’est ainsi que Chant de Paris atteste d’une approche innovante visant à inclure le spectateur dans la réalisation de l’œuvre.
