Franz Kline (1910-1962) Ink Drawing

Black ink drawing executed on the inside front cover of "Conversations with Artists" by Selden Rodman, copyright 1961. Untitled abstract composition, signed* (Franz Kline, 1910-1962). 5 x 8 inches. Good condition overall, having no visible tears or repairs. (Small crease to extreme lower right corner.) Unframed for inspection and shipping. Sold unframed.

Provenance: George Howard, Boston, Massachusetts, acquired directly from the artist. Gifted to the current owner's father by the latter, circa 1965. Thence by descent to the consignor.

According to the consignor, George Howard was an amateur painter who met Franz Kline in or around 1960, while vacationing in Provincetown, MA. The two remained friendly until Kline's death in 1962. Howard was also a long-time friend of the consignor's father.
