Description

In addition to the many precisely observant depictions of nature, Franz Kobell’s oeuvre repeatedly contains works in which dramatic effects appear heightened to the extreme. The setting of the present sheet is, as is often the case with such compositions, the seashore. Terrified, the small group in the foreground flees from the mass of water with the foaming spray rising up behind them. Despite all the movement, Kobell pays careful attention to a symmetrically balanced composition that gives the scene a backdrop-like aspect. – With faint diagonal crease marks in the upper area. Lower left corner with a small backed paper damage. Remnants of old mounting on verso of upper edge. In good condition.
